Streets, Homes, Landfills: Women in City's Waste Management 

 

Art exhibition for visibilsing work of informal waste workers, and putting forth demands of the union

Timeline: May 2024 l 4 weeks

SEWA Delhi, a trade union, organises informal women workers from multiple trades; domestic workers, home-based workers, construction workers, farmers etc - for to support livelihood.

 

The exhibition focuses on the union members  engaged in collecting & segregating the city’s waste from households, streets, sorting places/sites and landfills. It seeks to illuminate the dire consequences of inadequate women's rights, inequality, climate change, migratory status and the lack of decent working conditions.

Field Study

Preparation for the exhibition required documenting qualitative stories coupled with in-depth understanding of:

1) Work and work place

2) Household and Domestic life

3) Living Conditions and Social Security

4) Occupational Hazards

5) Gender  Based Violence

6) Mobility and Aspirations of women

These studies were conducted in two areas of Delhi; Dallupura & Harkesh Nagar.
