No City For Women?
Critical design and architecture workshop on city planning, urban development and public space making
Role: Poster, Student Workshop
Timeline: 2021 l 2 Weeks
Cities across the world have been designed unilaterally by men and consequently, they have been designed for men i.e. from their own perspectives and social experiences. What if our cities were designed by Women? is a provocation the event hopes to ignite - to re-imagine cities to include the concerns, needs and perspectives of under-represented groups, with a focus on gender.
To be able to create cities for people of all ages, abilities, gender and background, we need to question gender inequality and power imbalances in conventional approaches to city making. That is what this workshop meant for students of design and architecture aims to do, in order to create a gender equal discourse in the fields of design, architecture, urban development and planning, and consequently in the larger public.
‘No City for Women?’ was a series of online events held in September 2021 for students of design & architecture from Chandigarh and Jaipur, to reimagine their cities from the lens of gender.
It culminated in a public symposium where the students showcased their provocations, followed by a panel discussion on gender and city making between French and Indian experts.
